Damascus is een van de langst continu bewoonde steden ter wereld, met bewoning sinds 8000 v.Chr. Van 661 tot 750 was de stad hoofdstad van het Omajjaden-kalifaat, het eerste islamitische rijk. De Omajjaden-moskee uit 715 staat op de plek van een Romeinse tempel en later een christelijke kathedraal.

Damascus is one of the longest continuously inhabited cities in the world, with settlement since 8000 BC. From 661 to 750, the city was capital of the Umayyad Caliphate, the first Islamic empire. The Umayyad Mosque from 715 stands on the site of a Roman temple and later a Christian cathedral.
