Uruguay was in 2013 het eerste land ter wereld dat cannabis volledig legaliseerde. Eerder, in 2013, legaliseerde het ook als tweede land in Zuid-Amerika het homohuwelijk. Met 3,5 miljoen inwoners heeft het land bijna vier keer zoveel runderen: circa 12 miljoen.
