Samarkand, founded in the 7th century BC, was the capital of Tamerlane's empire and a hub of the Silk Road. Registan Square with its three madrasas is considered one of the finest examples of Islamic architecture. The Bibi Khanym Mosque was built with the help of 95 elephants from India.
